Bendgate is Not Behind Us

Certified Gadget Repair

The iPhone 6/6 Plus and 6S/6S Plus can’t get past the structural problem of Bendgate. Going way back to the release almost two years ago, Bendgate was a problem that plagued the 6 series. The structural problem allowed the phones to bend, usually right around the volume down button. Some cases were extreme, but usually the bend was minor. It was possible in some cases to bend the phone back to straight, but the problem was in the housing. And now, the problem has grown.

The same source of Bendgate, a structural problem in manufacturing, is pointing to a new plague on the iPhone 6 series. We will call it the Gray Bar of Death. The problem seems to occur when the Touch IC Chip becomes damaged. Sometimes from separating from the board, sometimes by cracking. The repair is simple enough, replace the chip. However, this is a BGA

Why Partner with CGR?

MissionCGR

Why Certified Gadget Repair?

Mission Repair has been an industry leader in mobile device and tablet repair since before the iPhone came into prominence. Over the years Mission Repair has grown with the demand for mobile electronic devices, both in size and also in versatility. Mission Repair has the most comprehensive selection of available repairs in the market. Adding in their long history of working hard for customer satisfaction has made MR one of the best repair solutions available.

So, why Certified Gadget Repair?

Compared to Mission Repair Certified Gadget Repair is a young company. However, CGR has successfully specialized in servicing B2B customers for volume device management and repair. CGR has streamlined many of the tedious repair processes, from allowing customers to track the progress of every repair online to building strong relationships with vendors. Not to mention a very strong team of leading technicians skilled at tackling any kind of repair whether it be hundreds of tablet repairs or on board game console logic board repairs.

The idea on which the partnership between MR and CGR was built is that both companies bring the best of each of their specialities. MR with industry leading service and comprehensive repairs, CGR with strong buying power and success in high volume repairs. Together Mission Repair and Certified Gadget Repair will bring the best customer service, the best technicians and the lowest prices to our customers.

What changes should you expect?

As Mission Repair and Certified Gadget Repair grow into one company you can expect to see the MR’s prices on most common repairs go down. You can also expect to see more available repairs on CGR’s site. Neither web page is going anywhere so existing customers don’t need to learn any new processes. As always, never hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Mission Repair is now powered by Certified Gadget Repair!

Summer is winding down and school is getting underway. Here at Mission Repair things have been busy, so busy in fact I have been putting together a new partnership that will bring a huge boost to our productivity and repair capabilities. Even with all of the technicians currently at Mission Repair the summer can be a challenge to maintain the proper turn around time and quality standards you have come to expect over the past eight years. I’ve been working tirelessly to build a new partnership over the past few months and am excited to announce that Mission Repair has joined forces with the premier repair depot in the US, Certified Gadget Repair, Inc. The management team at CGR, like me, have a long history in the wireless parts and repair industry. Their technicians are skilled and have been trained to handle the variety of repairs just as our own have. Behind the scenes I have been subcontracting some work to CGR for some of the micro-soldering work and overflow as Mission Repair needed a hand in recent months to keep up. We have joined forces to bring the best overall experience to both our retail and B2B customers. The newly formed management team has a diverse background and brings years of experience in repair, logistics, technology and education.

The first expansion store is now open, CGR has a retail location at 135th and Mur-Len. Many of you may not be aware that more than half of Mission Repair’s business comes from outside the Kansas City market. In addition we receive weekly referrals from local retail stores such as the Apple store, Best Buy, ATT, Verizon, Sprint just to name a few. We also have mail in customers that are directed to us by local repair shops across the country. We are one of the longest operating independent repair shops still doing iPod repairs in addition to all of the latest gadgets. We rarely say no to any repair, our motto is if we can find the parts… we will fix it! We serve the entire US and see repair orders shipped from around the world. As we continue to grow we needed a partner to help us expand quickly and keep the same high quality standards Mission Repair has built over it’s 8+ year history.  CGR has the business model, the experience and quality people to do just that. They have been servicing some of the larger insurance companies from across the US with excellent feedback.

I’m excited for the future and hope you will all join us in one of our new locations and one of many to come in the Kansas City area. We will be rebranding stores, adding locations and announcing some exciting events and classes in the near future. Thank you all for the continued support and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Chargers, Cables and all that mess!

Hello all –

I want to try and shed some light on charging cables and wall plugs. We see a fair bit of customers that either send a device in for a charging port repair or bring their device in due to it not charging. We many times simply plug the device in and it works here at the store. That seems strange to most people… however it’s a rather simple answer.

Apple-MFi-Certified-iPhone-5-6-Charging-Cable-8-pin-Lightning-Cord-USB-for-iPhone-6-6-Plus55s5c-iPads-Portable-White-Connector-for-Home-or-Travel-Fits-iPad-Mini-iPad-Air-iPod-Nano-and-iPod-Touch-iPhon-0-1

This shows the MFI Certified Chip that communicates with your Apple device. Many, many companies make knock off cables and charges $1.99, $4.99 etc… Well guess what? Those are not MFI certified and once you do a software update in iOS on your iPhone, iPod or iPad… it no longer will charge or be recognized as a working charger. Based on what I know from industry insiders the certification from Apple to use their OEM chips is approximately $5 to $7 USD per chip/per cable. So when you see a MFI certified cable by Belkin, Griffen or other brand name MFI certified cables for $19.99 you know it’s going to work. Not only with the current iOS software but future updates unlike the $2.99 charger you purchased a few months back.

Sorta reminds me of that saying… you get what you pay for? That still holds true after how knows how many years someone else mumbled those words. I’ve purchased a few of the cheap chargers and cables thinking I scored a great deal! Only to have one literally start smoking in my wife’s car… and another nearly burn my fingers when I went to unplug my iPhone. Ya that can happen. Fire, smoke, overcharging your devices etc…

Needless to say if your device is not charging we are always happy to take a look at it. I just wanted to pass along some knowledge before you bring in your device or ship it in. We get plenty of “Warranty” claims where they get their device repaired by Mission Repair and now days/weeks/months later they have a device that no longer takes a charge. Sometimes the simplest thing is the right one!

Happy Charging and be safe!

Jeff

iPad Air 2: Falling Prices!

Hello Everyone –

It’s always great when I get to drop the prices on a repair due to falling part costs! June is the month that brings the iPad Air 2 under the $200 mark. Thankfully as each device ages the parts costs slide down to a point the repairs make sense. The iPad Air 2 parts costs had been slowly sliding down for months but now that the iPad Pro is out the prices have dropped to a point the repair makes sense. I’ve adjusted prices as quickly as possible to bring the best value on this repair over the past few months. Now I’m expecting to see the parts level out a bit as it’s settled into a reasonable price point based on the cost of the device. Wether you are looking to repair and keep using or repair the Air 2 if your looking to sell it to upgrade to the iPad Pro.

fallingprices

Check out our Deal of the Month on the iPad Air 2 glass/LCD repair! This price is literally HALF the cost this repair was just 60 days ago. The part is more expensive than the normal iPad 2,3 or 4 and even the 1st Generation iPad Air due tot he fact the glass and LCD are fused together. The thinner the devices become more of a challenge for manufacturers to build so they turn to fusing parts and finding ways to make the devices thinner for each new generation of device.  Permanently bonding the glass and LCD allows them to shave  few millimeters in thickness. Great for marketing, not always great for consumers when it comes to the repair costs. However, the iPad Air 2 has many years of use left in it with cutting edge mobile components that will stream 4k video’s, run graphic intense mobile games and do just about anything a laptop can do.

Come by one of our Kansas City locations, or mail in your iPad today! Were happy to make the cracks disappear and return your device in like new condition!

Life happens… were here to fix it!

Technical Difficulties! (Resolved)

Hello everyone –

tech diff

The issues on our blog are resolved! For the past few weeks when visiting our site www.missionrepair.com, the link to the blog, which has been down, is now up and live….wohoo! Strangely enough while my entire staff was unable to view the blog from our office computers, I could view it on my iPhone without issues?!?

Needless to say, when purchasing a business, there are always some challenges in the transition. Well as it turns out, the employee that setup the blog for Mission Repair some 7 or 8 years ago did the common thing and used his name and email when setting everything up. Smooth sailing for years… until I attempted to renew the domain and pay the renewal for the coming year. Ryan of course had paid the service year after year without a hiccup, but now  a new CC and my name caused Word Press to question who the owner is/was. I do not fault them, security is important and not just letting anyone take your blog or website over is very important! The staff at Word Press (the company that hosts the blog) were doing their job to make sure to protect that information of the listed owner yet also help me with the transition to take ownership of the blog. Needless to say after chasing down emails and chat sessions, and proving we were the true owners, Word Press was speedy in their effort to make the updates and get the blog back up and live on the web!

Thank you all for your patience during the past few weeks as we sorted things out. The lesson to reflect upon and one I won’t soon forget….just like backing up your personal data, it’s always important to keep accurate records and review that backup on a regular basis.

Thank you all again for your patience and continued support on the blog, website and of course in our stores!

Vacation Tips to keep your devices safe!

Hello everyone –

Schools out, summer is here, let the vacations begin! Busy planning, packing and getting all the travel details ready? It’s easy not to think much about your cellphone right? It’s always just worked and been there when you need it….right? Well, a few things can change on vacation when your mind is on the family, fun and all the other details.

First off, while you never have an issue with battery life during your normal day being on the road can cause your battery to drain rather quickly. Why? well as you travel to different states you may end up “roaming” on another cell providers network. In fact as your phone searches for the best signal it can which causes it to use more battery power than normal, sometimes nearly double the amount of battery required! Grabbing a external battery pack or battery case can be helpful and extend the battery to what you normally expect.

Summer-vacation-message

The second thing to think about is if you are using your smartphone for GPS navigation? Once again… BIG battery drain.Make sure you have a quality car charger that can keep up with the power demands of your trip. I recommend a 10watt or even a 17watt car charger like the ones we sell everyday at both our Lenexa and Mission stores.  However the biggest danger no one thinks about is if you mount your phone in the windshield and then jump out to grab lunch… Well your car can get rather toasty, sort of like an easy bake oven! Take an average sunny 85 or 90 degree day your car’s interior can reach upwards of 140+ degrees! Literally baking your phone to the point it won’t turn on! Luckily most of the time once it cools down it will power back on. Heat is the number one enemy of electronics, while rare, it can cause permanent damage if temps reach high enough.

e4823ea6-23ee-4560-9365-81638c94f547

The third item is water… always be aware that if you’re at a resort or beach and you carry your phone I’ve heard more than a few stories of people forgetting the phone was in their shorts pocket and they jumped in for a swim! That rarely ends well. If it happens I know you want to turn the device on to see if its still working, but know that can be the worst thing you can do. Hitting the power button sends electricity throughout the device… and water that is likely inside can then short things out and literally kill the phone. The best thing to do is dry off the outside and then get it back to your hotel room and use a fan or a hair dryer on low heat or cool to blow on the phone overnight. We recommend twenty four hours but dry it for as long as you can before testing.

I hope these tips can save you some headaches and keep your smartphone or tablet safe and useful throughout your trip. Safe travels… and of course if the unthinkable happens Mission Repair is here to help!

Have a great summer!
