Skype, Microsoft’s online communications service, will soon be able to translate voice calls in “near real time” between people who speak different languages, much like the legendary universal communicator used in the Star Trek series.
The technology was developed by Microsoft’s Skype and Translator team, said Nadella, before showing off a development version of the software. The feature already works to translate back and forth from English to German, and Microsoft plans to get it working with numerous other languages. read more

Twitter is officially rolling out the oft-requested “mute” option. After testing the feature with a small group of users, the company today announced it’s in the process of rolling out mute, which lets you silence a particular user in your timeline, to everyone using its Android and iOS apps. Mute will also appear as an option on Twitter.com. “Muting a user on Twitter means their tweets and retweets will no longer be visible in your home timeline, and you will no longer receive push or SMS notifications from that user,” Twitter explains. Muting someone obviously won’t prevent them from favoriting, replying to, or retweeting your tweets. But if someone’s annoying you, you’ll at least no longer be bothered by any of that activity in your main timeline. read more

Recently we explored a series of new features for the mobile Gmail client, and now we have images of what those same feature look like on a desktop browser. No matter who you are, email clients are difficult to adjust. There’s a certain comfort level found in the rhythm of performing one of the most boring and routine tasks in our digital lives. At 10:00 AM, Pacific Time this morning, Microsoft released a patch for the zero-day Internet Explorer security hole that made headlines earlier this week. The patch applies to “all affected version of the browser”—that is, versions 6 through 11—and it’s available via Windows Update. read more
The Heartbleed Bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. This weakness allows stealing the information protected, under normal conditions, by the SSL/TLS encryption used to secure the Internet. SSL/TLS provides communication security and privacy over the Internet for applications such as web, email, instant messaging (IM) and some virtual private networks (VPNs).
The Heartbleed bug allows anyone on the Internet to read the memory of the systems protected by the vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software. This compromises the secret keys used to identify the service providers and to encrypt the traffic, the names and passwords of the users and the actual content. This allows attackers to eavesdrop on communications, steal data directly from the services and users and to impersonate services and users. read more

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is the fifth-generation version of the company’s Galaxy S series smartphones. The new handset, which largely seems to be an evolution of the Galaxy Note 3 with a slightly bigger 5.1-inch display, will be available starting April 11 in 150 countries in four different colors — “Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold.”
As far as the specs for the handset go, there are not many surprises as most of the rumors about the device turned out to be spot on. However, there are some added features that make the device stand out — the Galaxy S5 is water-resistant and features a fingerprint scanner similar to that of the Apple iPhone 5s.
